2018 yılının başlarında Hessen Eyalet Polisi’nin vatadanşlardan kripto para cüzdanlarından para çalındığı bildirimini almasının ardından başlatılmıştı. Süren soruşturmalarda hırsızlığın kaynağının IOTA kullanıcılarını hedef alan bir internet sitesi olan iotaseed.io olduğu belirlendi.

IOTA cüzdanları, IOTA’nın resmi internet sitesinde de belirtildiği gibi çevrimiçi ortamda bulunan ‘seed’ üreticileri kullanılarak oluşturulabilen 81 basamaklı bir ‘seed’ ile korunuyor. Iotaseed.io da çevrimiçi olarak seed üretilebilen bir internet sitesiydi. Mağdurların bu internet sitesini kullanarak yarattıkları seed’ler, servis sağlayıcı tarafından arka planda saklanıyordu. Suçlu, daha sonra bunları mağdurların cüzdanlarına erişmek ve paralarını sahte ID’lerle oluşturulan diğer cüzdanlara transfer etmek için kullandı.

2018 yılının Temmuz ayında Alman makamları, dolandırıcının İngiltere’de yaşadığını belirledi. Olay daha sonra Europol’e aktarıldı. Suçlu, İngiltere polisi tarafından Oxford’daki evine yapılan baskında gözaltına alınırken evde birkaç bilgisayar ve elektronik cihaz ele geçirildi.
